West Kent Unitary Plan Paused — SDC Elections Return May 2027

Just two months after announcing a new West Kent unitary council, the Labour Government has paused the decision — meaning Sevenoaks District Council will hold fresh elections next May after all.

What's Happened

On 16 July 2026, the Government announced plans to replace Sevenoaks District Council, Kent County Council and 12 other Kent authorities with four new unitary councils under Local Government Reorganisation (LGR).
The new West Kent unitary council was set to combine Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge & Malling and Maidstone.
On 7 September 2026, Communities Secretary Angela Rayner announced a review of the LGR programme, pausing decisions — including Kent's — following new legal advice.
The Government has not said when, or if, the West Kent unitary decision will go ahead.

What This Means for Sevenoaks Residents

Sevenoaks District Council will hold elections for a new set of councillors in May 2027, on the existing ward boundaries.
Liberal Democrats are already the main opposition party on the Council and are targeting further gains from the Conservatives.
The millions of pounds and staff time already spent preparing for reorganisation have, for now, delivered no new council structure.

Reaction from Sevenoaks Liberal Democrats

Cllr Alan Leaman, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Sevenoaks District Council, said:

"I dread to think how many millions of pounds have been spent on this project, along with huge amounts of staff time, energy and resource. Careers of vital public servants have been disrupted unnecessarily and with reckless disregard.

"Now the re-organisation plans have been suspended and may be abandoned. This is an appalling tale of costly indecision and incompetence from central government."

Cllr Leaman added:

“The record of the failing Sevenoaks Conservative administration is terrible. No wonder they've had four leaders in just a few years. It is time for change and the promise of a better Council. Liberal Democrats are ready for that opportunity.”
